WIA Youth Program

Montana Youth Independence Project

WIA Youth Program

Purpose: The Workforce Investment Act (WIA) Title IB Youth Program provides services to youth ages 14-21. The main thrust of the Youth Program is to increase the focus on longer-term academic and occupational learning opportunities and provide long-term comprehensive service strategies. Youth services are provided to in-school youth ages 14-21 and out-of-school youth ages 16-21.

Economic Development: The Youth Program is designed to prepare Montana’s youth to either enter post-secondary education, training or employment upon completion of their secondary education. The aging of Montana’s workforce is an issue of concern and therefore this program can be an instrument toward meeting the future workforce demands.

Youth program elements consist of:

  1. Tutoring, study skills training and instruction leading to the completion of secondary schooling including dropout prevention strategies;
  2. Alternative secondary school services;
  3. Paid and unpaid work experiences including internships and job shadowing;
  4. Occupational skill training;
  5. Leadership development opportunities;
  6. Supportive services;
  7. Adult mentoring for a duration of at least twelve months, that may occur during and after program participation;
  8. Follow up services for not less than 12 months after the participant completes the program; and
  9. Comprehensive guidance and counseling, and referral to counseling as appropriate to meet the needs of the participant.

Eligibility: An individual must be between the ages of 14-21, low income and meet at least one of the following barriers to employment:

  1. School dropout (individual is no longer attending any school and has not received a secondary school diploma or its recognized equivalent)
  2. Basic literacy skills (individuals that have English, writing or computing skills at or below the 8th grade level on a generally accepted standardized test)
  3. Foster child
  4. Pregnant or parenting
  5. Homeless or runaway youth

MONTANA YOUTH INDEPENDENCE
PROJECT

Statewide Transitional Living Program for runaway and homeless youth (RHY) ages 16-21.  Montana Youth Independence Project (MYIP) will provide shelter and services for homeless youth through the statewide network of Human Resource Development Councils (HRDC’s).  Shelter options include existing shelter services, i.e., existing residential facilities, including group homes, supervised apartment and transitional living shelters.  This program focuses on helping homeless youth become self-sufficient.

WHAT CAN THE MYIP PROGRAM OFFER YOU?

  • MYIP will secure or provide shelter and work with agencies to insure youth are accessing programs that will provide food and other services.

  • MYIP will secure or provide job and life skill training so that youth feel that they are competent and ready to achieve self-sufficiency.

  • MYIP will assist youth in becoming gainfully employed.  In addition, pregnant and parenting youths will obtain parenting skills training.

  • MYIP will strive to keep youth in their home communities.  In some situations, MYIP may help a youth transition smoothly to another community to have a fresh start and develop ties to the community.

  • MYIP will involve youth in their individual transition plan from the beginning.  This will enable youth to feel that they have control over their future.  By helping youth set goals and then meet them, MYIP will be empowering youth to take control over their lives.
